Whimsy and lightheartedness temper any notion of grand design. I feel a genuine warmth for my subject matter, which I find in many places.

Jill Noble studied at the South Australian School of Art before moving to Melbourne in 1982, where she became a founding member of Roar Studios.

Noble celebrates the landscape and nature in a simplified, naïve form. She creates a flattened perspective, using real and invented shapes, through a process of adding and subtracting to and from negative and positive forms. "I edit until these arrangements share a harmonious composure … . Arrangement and reduction are crucial in my aesthetic decision making."

The simplicity of narrative in Noble's paintings comes from real-life observations—from a grand open vista to a humble corner paddock and old shed. Form, space and a bold use of colour are given priority over realism and any of its implied principles.

Noble's recent work is inspired by observations of the north central farmlands of Victoria's boulder country, random moments on her Lancefield farm, and places she continues to visit such as the Gippsland Lakes and the South Australian desert.
