Sydney Contemporary 2024: Booths A03 & E02

Nanda\Hobbs’ 2024 Sydney Contemporary presentation draws on the unique visions of seven contemporary artists that recontextualise themes associated with contemporary society. 

The diverse practices of Yoshio Honjo, Jonathan Dalton, Braddon Snape, Lottie Consalvo, Nicholas Blowers, Caroline Zilinsky, and Marie Mansfield make for an intriguing exhibition.  All possess strong technical abilities that allow them to morph traditional mediums to create innovative and intriguing visual dialogues.

Lottie Consalvo transcends the boundaries of the visible and tangible, pushing into the mind’s capacity to explore the unbound possibilities of our existence and what lies beyond. Yoshio Honjo plays with the traditional fairytales from his native Japan - the interplay with contemporary consumerism is subtly woven into the delicate works that owe much to his heritage and career in tattooing. Caroline Zilinsky's work addresses the coercive nature of social media - truth-bending and the development of ‘simulated societal norms - that have become our contemporary reality at the core of her work for SC 24. Nicholas Blowers's investigations into the beauty in the deconstructed landscape owe much to the traditions of the landscape genre - yet are poignantly powerful in its contemporary context.  Jonathan Daltons' appropriation of contemporary artworks is seen through his inquiring mind and innovative recontexualstion - questioning the influence and power of imagery in society. Marie Mansfield draws the moments in our lives that are unspoken or ignored. Her noiresque images capture the fleeting times that are often forgotten -poignant and darkly beautiful. Bradon Snape's innovative sculptural works confuse accepted notions of materiality. His use of inflated steel, bending and contorted to his specifications - is created with a nod to how we operate in a world clinging to being human.
