Dead Reckoning unveils a new body of work by Peter Gardiner, marking the moment when the artist’s mind and hand have become inextricably intertwined. His elemental vision—spanning tempests, fiery island beacons, and the play of light against darkness—reveals the profound beauty that arises even in the bleakest hours.
The Claudian glow that emanates from Gardiner’s blazing structures, whether man-made or natural, serves as a beacon through uncertainty. They act to illuminate the path from chaos to clarity. Gardiner’s great gift lies in his ability to draw on the past to interpret the environments he encounters. Gustave Courbet’s dynamic breaking waves are reimagined as shore breaks along the New South Wales coast. The familiar energy of green water crashing on the sandy shore is so intrinsic to how we view ourselves in this land.
The artist, on a recent voyage around Tasmania’s southern edge, was windswept and battered by an ocean that both sustains and threatens life, further deepening his engagement with nature's elemental power. In these works, Gardiner channels the spirit of J.M.W. Turner, who famously lashed himself to a ship’s mast during a raging storm to truly feel what the world offered him. Like Turner, Gardiner does not merely depict the natural world; he endures it, emerging with visions forged from light, fury, and resilience.
