We’re pleased to share that artist Liam Ross Baker will join Helen Shield live on ABC Radio Hobart tonight at 6:35pm AEDT to discuss his current exhibition, THE CROSS AND THE CORMORANT.
Broadcast across Hobart and Tasmania as part of Evenings, the conversation will offer listeners an opportunity to hear directly from Baker about his practice, his new exhibition, and the experiences and landscapes that continue to inform his work.
Born in Lutruwita/Tasmania and raised in the small fishing town of Dover, Baker’s paintings are deeply connected to the people, landscapes and rhythms of his surroundings. His practice combines observation, storytelling and an understated sense of humour, creating figurative paintings that can feel intimate, funny and quietly unsettling. THE CROSS AND THE CORMORANT, currently presented in Level One, draws on Baker’s rural and coastal upbringing in south-east Tasmania. The exhibition marks an important moment in the development of his practice and introduces audiences to a distinctive emerging voice in Australian painting.
Working predominantly in oil on canvas and board, Baker builds his scenes from observation and imagination. Small, unexpected details and moments of dry humour sit alongside a sensitivity to vulnerability and the peculiarities of everyday Australian life.
For Baker, appearing on ABC Radio Hobart is a particularly fitting opportunity to talk about the work. Tasmania and its communities is embedded in his visual language, even as his practice now extends beyond the state to his current hometown in Melbourne, Victoria.
Tune in tonight at 6:35pm AEDT on ABC Radio Hobart to hear Liam Ross Baker in conversation with Helen Shield.
