Tim Storrier

With a career spanning more than five decades, Tim Storrier has established himself as one of Australia's foremost interpreters of the landscape, exploring themes of mood, memory, and the passage of time through works of exceptional technical mastery. The Night Run (Star Trail) exemplifies his celebrated nocturnal paintings, reducing the Australian landscape to its most elemental forms—earth, stars, fire, and air—and revealing the boundless relationship between these enduring forces.

His Blaze Line paintings with the the burning rope motif has become one of the defining images of his career. Suspended above an expansive horizon, the incandescent line recalls both the elemental force of fire and the regenerative cycles of the land. Sir William Dargie famously associated these works with the traditional practice of Indigenous cultural burning, lending the imagery a deeper resonance within the Australian landscape. Storrier heightens this tension through a composition dominated by vast sky and open plain, where stillness is interrupted by the luminous blaze. 

Storrier's work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Gallery of Australia; the Art Gallery of New South Wales; the National Gallery of Victoria; the Art Gallery of Western Australia; the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory; the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art; and numerous regional and institutional collections throughout Australia. He won the Archibald Prize in 2012 and the Sulman Prize twice, in 1968 and 1984. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1994 and served as a Trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1989.
