John Olsen

John Olsen (1928–2023) was one of Australia's most celebrated artists, whose career spanned more than seven decades. Renowned for his vibrant interpretations of the Australian landscape, he developed a distinctive pictorial language of energetic line, bold colour and expressive mark-making that balanced representation with abstraction. Inspired by European modernism and shaped by formative years in Spain, Olsen returned to Australia in 1960 with a renewed vision that transformed Australian painting.

His celebrated You Beaut Country series and later depictions of Sydney Harbour, including the iconic Five Bells and the Sydney Opera House mural Salute to Five Bells, established him as a leading interpreter of Australia's unique environment. Throughout his career, Olsen sought to capture the vitality, movement and spiritual essence of Country rather than its literal appearance.

Repeated journeys to Lake Eyre profoundly influenced his work, introducing a more contemplative and lyrical approach informed by Zen and Taoist philosophy. Wildlife, aerial perspectives and poetic evocations of place became enduring motifs, while later paintings reflected on memory, mortality and the artist's place within nature.

Olsen won the Wynne Prize twice, the Sulman Prize and the Archibald Prize, and was appointed an OBE and later an AO. His work is held in every major Australian public collection, cementing his legacy as one of the nation's most influential painters.
