Biography
Lives and works in SOUTH GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA
Adam Nudelman (b. 1967, Melbourne) is a contemporary Australian painter whose practice explores the tensions between belonging and dislocation within the Australian landscape. Working from his studio in South Gippsland, Victoria, he employs a meticulous and highly refined painting technique to render environments that feel at once familiar and otherworldly; vast horizons punctuated by solitary structures, markers of history, memory and cultural inheritance.
Since completing his studies at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1994, Nudelman has developed a significant practice that bridges the traditions of Australian landscape painting with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. His paintings engage deeply with ideas of place, identity and the legacy of migration, often referencing the experiences of his Jewish forebears while examining the broader narratives of settlement and post-colonial Australia. Without resorting to figurative cliché, his compositions become poetic allegories—meditations on longing, exile, and the search for belonging.
Nudelman has presented more than thirty solo exhibitions across Australia, including recent shows at Nanda/Hobbs (Sydney), Queenscliffe Gallery (Victoria), and Hill-Smith Gallery (Adelaide). His work has been widely collected and exhibited in major art prizes, including multiple selections for the John Glover Prize and the Rick Amor Drawing Prize. His practice has been the subject of critical reviews, catalogues and film, including the 2023 documentary Nudelman Composed by Peter Lamont.
Nudelman's work is held in significant public and private collections such as La Trobe University Museum of Art, Gippsland Art Gallery, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, The Australian Jewish Museum, and numerous corporate and institutional collections both in Australia and internationally.
