Engagement with the natural world has long been central to my practice, though the works are not intended as direct representations of landscape. The Beyond series reflects my ongoing inward focus—looking beneath the surface and beyond the visible, both internally and in relation to the natural world, where meaning and essence reside.
Trees, mist, and ambiguous spaces function not as descriptive elements but as quiet metaphors for reflection and transition. They invite a slowing of perception and a more attentive internal dialogue. The works are deliberately restrained, occupying space with a gentle presence. Mist operates as both veil and threshold, simultaneously obscuring and revealing. It suggests movement through uncertainty while evoking a liminal state in which attention turns inward and meaning emerges gradually, shaped as much by what is withheld as by what is seen.
This sense of restraint is reinforced through a reduced visual language. Working tonally with a minimal palette, colors are softened and compositional elements held in careful balance. The paintings are intended to be experienced slowly, allowing subtle shifts in tone, depth, and surface to unfold over time. In doing so, they offer a pause from the complexity of contemporary life, creating space for stillness and reflection.
Process is integral to the work. Each painting develops slowly and intuitively through the accumulation of many thin layers of transparent oil paint. These layers remain visible, contributing to depth, luminosity, and balance. As the surface evolves, the painting reaches a point where it shifts from image to presence, quietly holding its own power. This gradual transformation reflects the conceptual concerns underpinning the series: beauty, harmony, balance, and the act of looking beyond the surface for what is essential.
Ultimately, my work seeks to create spaces for quiet contemplation, encouraging a deeper awareness of the subtle transitions that shape both inner and outer experience.
