  • His paintings might suggest flowers, geological forms, wings, cells or even fragments of landscape, but they never resolve into any one thing. Recognition flickers and disappears. What remains is a sense of something forming: matter gathering, dividing, and constantly drifting towards itself.

  • Anthea Mentzalis
    September, 2026

Christopher Horder’s paintings begin with a surrender to matter. Water is worked into linen, pigment released across the surface and left to move according to its own logic. As the water evaporates, the marks slowly gather and settle. The process is repeated again: soak, stain, dry, layer. Later, he introduces oil paint, bringing another kind of agency through dragging, glazing, and removing.

He describes this as an attempt to “paint the space between” things. His paintings might suggest flowers, geological forms, wings, cells or even fragments of landscape, but they never resolve into any one thing. Recognition flickers and disappears. What remains is a sense of something forming: matter gathering, dividing, and constantly drifting towards itself. Horder is preoccupied with the distance between the world and the systems we use to describe it. We name something and believe we know it: we classify it, understand its properties, place it within our system of understanding. But naming is not the same as knowing. Some things can disappear from language entirely, and still remain in our mythos.

Horder’s recent reading of Gnosticism, mythology and other forms of marginalised knowledge act as entry points into these paintings. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, for instance, hold particular significance precisely because of their surrounding uncertainty. Described by ancient writers as a vast, terraced garden rising above the dry landscape of Babylon, they were said to have been built by a king for his homesick wife, recreating the green mountains of her homeland in the heart of Mesopotamia. Yet, no conclusive archaeological evidence has ever established that the gardens existed at all. They endure instead as a kind of cultural mirage: a monument surviving for more than two millennia held immortal through the trace of its existence.

A legendary garden survives as an image carried through language and memory, and Horder’s paintings work in a similar register. They are accumulations of trace: of water, pigment, gravity, time, and attention. Their surfaces record events that cannot be entirely reconstructed. Each layer partially obscures what came before while remaining inseparable from it.

For Horder, painting is a way of remembering. Each work holds something of the moment in which it was made — a reading, experience, emotion, material discovery — and fixes it to the canvas. His mark-making becomes a “keyhole” into the stain; a precise point at which a new mark can enter and make the whole image move. One mark attracts another and pigment gathers like matter, akin to raindrops joining through coalescence. Working accumulatively, he returns to the surface until an image begins to declare its internal logic. His smaller works become densely articulated, while the larger paintings often allow the original stains to remain more exposed. In both cases, the composition develops through attention rather than predetermined design. Every mark has to find its place, which makes the physical process inseparable from the ideas behind it.

Horder’s philosophical concerns are not painted onto the work, but they are enacted through it. The uncertainty of perception becomes the certainty of the stain. The instability of matter becomes the stability of the mark. Thought is tested through paint. A breakthrough becomes a dead end, and a failed experiment becomes a new direction. The surface remains constant while everything around it changes. Interpretation shifts with each new encounter.

Christopher Horder is trying to reach a painting that exists, at least for him, somewhere ahead of the work he has already made: a painting capable of reconciling his internal vision with the physical limits of painting. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is the evidence left behind by his inquiry. Through this continual shedding and rebuilding, he leaves a trace of his commitment to see differently: to look beyond the names we give things and the solidity of the world towards what might exist in those in-between spaces.

In Conversation: Leslie Rice and Christopher Horder

      Artist Talk October 10, 2026
What happens when two very different artists sit down to talk about how they approach their distinctive creative process? This Saturday, join Leslie Rice and Christopher Horder from 2-3pm in the gallery for a conversation around painting, process, material, and the curious ways an artist’s past can find its way into the work. Hear from two of Australia's great painters who share an obsession with what a surface can hold. Rice’s Almost a Mountain looks to the landscape of Townsville’s Castle Hill, his works tied together through his personal history...
