Important Private Sale — Ray Crooke

20 October 2021

This major oil painting is one of the most attractive and significant Crooke landscapes to come onto the secondary market. It is the first time Fitzroy Crossing has been offered for sale since 1988 when it was originally collected from Holdsworth Galleries, Sydney. Crooke’s travels across the northern interior of Australia and its neighboring oceanic islands allowed the artist to develop a deep understanding of the land. Crooke knew the landscape intimately— Fitzroy River captures the beauty of our country with each thoughtful stroke. Here, clear blue skies pop against the muted Australian earth and translucent mirrored waters reflects the tranquility of landscape. Crooke’s delicate mark-making invites viewer contemplation—to feel the heat haze and relief in the cooling waters in the great northwest expanse of Australia.
