Jun Chen painting sells at double the estimate, Shapiro Auctioneers 24 Sep

26 September 2024

Jun Chen's 'Flower Market', oil on canvas, 100 x 106cm sold for $18,750 against estimates of $8000 to $10,000 at Shapiro's sale of Art and Objects from the Estate of Ray Hughes on Tuesday 24 September. This is the second highest price recorded at auction for a painting by Chen and is 25% higher than the current gallery price of a similar sized work by the artist.

Hughes’ son Evan Hughes told Saleroom this was the last sale in the Ray Hughes auction series, marking the end of an era and the dispersion of one of the most admired and looked-at art collections in Australia.
