The old saying tells us that blood is thicker than water. A phrase about loyalty and kinship, it is a reminder that the bonds of family are presumed to run deeper than those formed by circumstance. Blood belongs to the body; water belongs to the world.
Across Gallery One and Two, Thicker Than Water considers these invisible forces: the things that connect us across the vastness of our experiences, time and place. The works in the exhibition move between the intimate and the immense, between personal histories held within the body and the larger histories embedded in our surroundings. Are the things we cannot see powerful enough to shape us?
